Dear Parents,

As many of you are already aware, the Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent has proposed major reductions in the fiscal budget for the 2008-2009 school year. We, your PTA officers, want to make sure that every parent is informed and understands the extent of these proposed cuts, and the consequences they could have for our schools.

Among some of the possible results of the proposed budget:

Reduction of teacher positions as a result of increased class size
Reduction of Instructional Assistant positions
Reduction of funding for instructional materials
Restructuring and reduction of summer school services
The elimination of over 500 positions within the system
Increased student activity fees

A Public hearing with the School Board will be held on May 14th and possibly May 15th (one has already taken place on February 6th) at Jackson Middle School on Gallows Road. Any individuals wanting to speak before the board must register in advance. To register, visit www.fcps.edu/schlbd/requestspeak.htm. Additionally, the School Board will be presenting their budget to the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, April 1st.

Finally, Tessie Wilson, our Braddock District Representative on the School Board, has offered to come to one of our PTA meetings to discuss this situation and answer any questions you may have.
